Morgan Migration – Morganza Spillway, Morganza, Louisiana
The Morganza Spillway was thrust into the news by the May 2011 flooding of the mighty Mississippi River. Started in 1939, completed by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1954 and, until May 14, 2011, used only once – in 1973, the spillway was named for the community located just to the south of it. This community, Morganza, Louisiana, was named for Charles Morgan, the youngest son of Captain James Morgan and brother of Major General James Morgan, Jr., who established a very large plantation there in the early 1800s.
